LYT SONIC – Smart Home security device based on infrasound detection technology
With a home burglary taking place every 0.8 seconds in Europe, people’s increasing concerns for both personal and property security is propelling the Smart Home Security market. A host of hardwired, wireless, and compact self-contained Smart Security systems is commercially available, embedding motion detectors, door/window sensors, and video cameras. However, the latest market researches on consumers’ expectations emphasise a gap between what is currently available and the consumers’ quest for affordable, reliable, easy to use and stylish home devices.
LYT SONIC’s mission is to change the way home security is delivered, by integrating an innovative infrasonic detection technology into a smart LED bulb, to be easily plugged into any lamp holder end/or socket. The core innovation is represented by the advancement of the infrasonic detection technology, the new frontier in the security industry, whose development is being pioneered by few companies with still limited success. Through a proprietary algorithm able to pinpoint the source of the infrasound signal LYT Sonic represents a simple, affordable, reliable and intuitive product for smart home security.
LYT SONIC infrasonic waves’ sensor collects environmental sounds and, through a Wi-Fi connection, transmits them to a software application with a machine learning algorithm able to analyse the event, discriminate false and true alarms, and control both the alarm system and home lighting.

FACCESS – Enabling the large-scale deployment of Facial Recognition in banking security
There is a strong demand in the banking industry for secure biometric applications. In May 2014 the European Central Bank (ECB) published a list of recommendations for increased banking security and biometrics was included as one of the most secure authentication methods. Concerns about banking security have always existed, but it has been after the breakthrough of online and mobile banking when bank fraud has become major issue to address with urgency.
Currently, banking authentication is typically done by using 4-6 digits PIN codes. This form of authentication provides an extremely low security, especially in online banking where cybercriminals can hack this PIN code in a matter of seconds. As a result, the total value of fraudulent transactions is rapidly increasing year by year, being now estimated at €1.44 billion solely in Europe.
In this scenario, biometrics holds great promise to become a reference banking authentication method in a near future. However, despite the clear opportunity there are still some barriers preventing the banking biometrics breakthrough, at least on a large scale.
FacePhi has developed a face recognition technology, specifically designed to overcome the current barriers preventing the large scale deployment of banking biometrics. Now, in the FACCESS Phase 2 project we seek demonstrating our facial recognition technology can actually unleash the large scale deployment of banking biometrics by the implementation of our product in the mobile/online platforms of 6 international banking institutions.

MarTERA – Maritime and Marine Technologies for a New ERA
The overall goal of the proposed Cofund is to strengthen the European Research Area (ERA) in maritime and marine technologies and Blue Growth. This demands broad and systematic cooperation in all areas of waterborne transport, offshore activity, marine resources, maritime security, biotechnologies, desalination, offshore oil & gas, fisheries, aquaculture etc. covering all relevant maritime and marine sectors and regions for a sustainable development of the maritime sector. The consortium will organise and co-fund, together with the EU, a joint call for trans-national research projects on different thematic areas of Blue Growth. Furthermore, additional joint activities that go beyond this co-funded call are planned, in order to contribute to the national priorities as well as to the Strategic Research Agenda of JPI Oceans and WATERBORNE.
With the cooperation of ERA-NET MARTEC and JPI Oceans, a broader variety of topics with a larger amount of funding will be available for the trans-national projects. Moreover, the focus of development in MarTERA is given to technologies (instead of sectors) due to their potentially large impact to a wide range of application fields.

CAR – Context-Active Resilience in Cyber Physical Systems
Context-active resilience is a novel concept of CPS resilience proposed in this action, which emphasises active and even proactive response to the dynamic state of CPS and its users in real-time. CAR Patterns will be identified via the empirical analysis of practical CPS systems, and specified with the developed Meta-Intelligence and populated into a semantic repository.

Due to the wide and critical roles of CPS in industry and society and the novelty of context-active resilience, the proposal is both timely and significant. Acting as a bridge, the project will simultaneously advance the theoretic approach and art of practice of this emerging topic, improve the competency and career of the fellow, enhance and complement the host’s research profile and infrastructure, and benefit the society, living, economy and related research communities significantly.

COFFERS – Combating Fiscal Fraud and Empowering Regulators
Since 2008 ‘fiscal leaks’ have become an immediate policy challenge for EU governments, partly as a result of tax abuse. The COFFERS project unfolds as EU tax authorities transition to a new era in tackling tax abuse based upon policy innovation at the OECD, EU and national levels.

COFFERS benchmarks current understanding of these issues, undertakes comparative analysis of approaches taken to tackle them across EU Member States, and assesses resources being allocated to the task of closing the tax gap. The mechanisms undermining the expected effectiveness of tax systems will be appraised, especially with regard to responses to regulatory changes taking place.

Deliverables of use to EU tax authorities include new tax gap analyses by state, tax risk maps identifying risk by jurisdiction, a new anatomy of money laundering risk, and tools to help tax authorities understand the risks that they face domestically and internationally.

Platforms4CPS – Creating the CPS Vision, Strategy, Technology Building Blocks and Supporting Ecosystem for Future CPS Platforms
Support for the development and integration of Cyber-Physical Systems is seen as essential for the future. As the embedded world meets the Internet world there will be an increasing number of interacting systems with strong connectivity utilised in both society and in industry. Platforms4CPS targets the transport, manufacturing, energy and health sectors.

Platforms4CPS aims to “create the vision, strategy, technology building blocks and supporting ecosystem for future CPS applications” with three key objectives to:

  • Create a vision and strategy for future European CPS by analysing the ecosystem and market perspective and strategically updating and validating existing CPS roadmaps across multiple domains
  • Promote platform building, bringing together industry and academic experts and create a repository of CPS technology building blocks
  • Build an ecosystem by creating a constituency and through cooperating with ECSEL, ITEA, and ARTEMIS projects on the foundations of CPS engineering, and consensus-building on societal and legal issues related to the deployment of CPS.

LIGHTKEY – Providing Secured Mobile Access Solutions Through Visible Light Communication
Mobile access is becoming commonplace: the user gets access to a facility by sending a request to an electronic lock. The lock recognises the request, verifies the provided access code and opens up. Current radio frequency-based communication technologies such as Wi-Fi, near-field communication (NFC), and Bluetooth are applied in a large variety of applications. However, they have serious security drawbacks: the data can be picked up by devices within a 10 metre radius, they are susceptible to hackers, consume large amounts of power, are not interoperable with all operators and platforms and usually require costly hardware.

Our Visible Light Communication solution LightKey will provide secure mobile access through photonics without any of the drawbacks of currently available mobile access solutions. It can be used on any mobile device as mobile phones already have the required hardware component (LED in the mobile´s flashlight). There are three steps: 1) download and activate LightKey to mobile phone, 2) introduce personal code and 3) LightKey triggers the camera flash or screen light and modulates and optical custom code.

PJ14 EECNS – Essential and Efficient Communication Navigation and Surveillance Integrated System
The PJ 14 CNS aims to specify and develop the future technologies coming from the communication, navigation and surveillance domains in order to support and manage the operational services, like the 4D trajectory management, in the future ATM system.

All the activities performed in the PJ 14 CNS will be developed at European Level in order to avoid a fragmented approach and to ensure the interoperability as depicted in the ICAO Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP). The CNS technologies support the GANP in terms of:

  • Airport Operations
  • Globally Interoperable System Data
  • Optimum capacity and flexible flights

The PJ 14 aims to develop and improve solution, not already available, from the technological point of view to support the future ATM global system.
