NEWLY AWARDED PROJECTS:
1. EU Action to Fight Environmental Crime (EFFACE)
Drawing on quantitative and qualitative approaches and data, and in-depth investigation of different types of environmental crime, EFFACE will assess the main costs, impacts and causes of environmental crime in the EU. This will also include those linked to the EU but occurring outside its territory, complemented by a comprehensive analysis of the status quo regarding extant instruments, actors and institutions.
EFFACE’s conceptual framework will lay define the research questions and terms to be used in the project to yield insights into how the fight against environmental crime has been approached so far within the EU, including the strengths and weaknesses of existing approaches.
The costs and impacts of environmental crime will be quantified to the extent feasible for different types of crime. Several case studies from various countries will shed light on the mechanisms and impacts of different types of environmental crime inside and beyond the EU, and possible counter-measures.
EFFACE will ultimately develop options and policy recommendations for the EU in its fight against environmental crimes. The project will hold dialogue with stakeholders and disseminate its results through various channels. An advisory board consisting of practitioners and academic experts working on environmental crime will provide input to EFFACE, ensuring its results are of practical relevance.
